When to Replace Your Tires

Let’s be real—nobody gets excited about buying new tires.
(Ok, some of us do....) But your tires are the only thing keeping your car connected to the road, so knowing when to replace them is kind of a big deal—especially with Astoria’s rainy roads, winding highways, and unpredictable weather. 🌧️
So, how do you know if your tires are still good, or if they’re quietly plotting your next hydroplane experience? Here’s what to look for:
1. The Penny Test: The Lazy Way to Check Tread 🪙
Tire tread isn’t just there for style—it’s what keeps you from slipping and sliding all over the road. If your tread is too low, your stopping distance increases, and rain turns your car into a boat (not in a cool way). Side note... I will admit I like a sexy tire tread, and when I write quotes, I don't just do research on the tire, I consider the asthetic look as well because I like a good looking tread on a good looking vehicle....
Here’s an easy hack to check your tread:
🔹 Grab a penny and stick it head first into the tread grooves.
🔹 If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, congrats—you need new tires.
🔹 If you drive in wet or snowy conditions, don’t wait until you hit the legal limit (2/32”). You’ll want at least 4/32” for better grip.
2. Old Tires Are Bad Tires—Even If They Look Fine ⏳
Even if your tires look brand new, rubber breaks down over time. The last thing you want is for your tires to dry out and crack when you’re flying down the highway. Most tire manufacturers recommend replacing them every 6 to 10 years, no matter how much tread is left.
Pro tip: Check the sidewall of your tire for a four-digit code. The first two numbers are the week, and the last two are the year the tire was made. If your tires are over 6 years old, it’s time to swap them out.
3. Your Driving Style is a Tread Killer 🚦💨
How you drive affects how fast your tires wear out. If any of these sound familiar, your tires might be waving a white flag:
✔ You brake like you're in a Fast & Furious movie. Hard braking wears tires faster.
✔ You take corners aggressively. (Looking at you, sporty drivers. 👀) This wears out the edges of your tires.
✔ You don’t check your tire pressure. Under- or over-inflated tires wear unevenly and hurt fuel economy.
Simple fixes? Drive smoothly, check your tire pressure regularly, and get tire rotations every 5,000–7,500 miles. (Fun fact, we're happy to do that with each oil change, just ask)!
4. Astoria Weather is Hard on Tires ☔
Living on the Oregon Coast means dealing with rain, salty air, and temperature swings. All of these factors can speed up tire wear, cause cracking, and make them lose grip.
