The Ultimate Pre-Trip Inspection for Your Cannon Beach or Seaside Day Trip

A spontaneous drive down Highway 101 to see Haystack Rock or explore the Seaside Promenade is one of the best parts of living on the North Coast. But nothing puts a damper on a perfect day trip like car trouble. A few quick checks before you head out can make the difference between a memorable adventure and a stressful roadside situation.

This pre-trip checklist is designed to give you confidence for your short coastal journey.

Under the Hood: The Core Systems

A quick look under the hood can reveal potential problems before they leave you stranded.

●     Engine Oil: Check the level with the dipstick. The oil should be between the two marks and a clear, amber-brown color. If it’s low, dark black, or gritty, it’s time for a service.

●     Coolant: Locate the coolant reservoir and check that the liquid level is between the “MIN” and “MAX” lines. The coolant should be clean and brightly colored (usually green, orange, or pink). Never open the radiator cap when the engine is hot.

●     Washer Fluid: Coastal highways are famous for spray and mist. Top off your windshield washer fluid with a bug-removing formula to ensure you can maintain clear visibility.

Tires: Your Connection to the Road

Your tires are critical for safety and efficiency on the winding stretches of 101.

●     The Penny Test: Check your tread depth. Take a penny and insert it into the tread grooves with Lincoln's head upside down. If you can see the top of his head, your tread is too worn for optimal safety on wet roads.

●     Tire Pressure: Check all four tires, including the spare, when they are cold. Inconsistent pressure can affect handling and fuel economy. The correct pressure is listed on a sticker inside your driver’s side door jamb, not the sidewall of the tire.

●     Visual Inspection: Look for any cracks, bulges, or objects lodged in the tread.

Lights and Visibility: See and Be Seen

From the shaded stretches of the coastal forest to sudden sea fog, your lights are vital.

●     Test All Lights: Have a friend walk around the car while you check your headlights (high and low beams), fog lights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazard lights.

●     Clean Windows and Mirrors: Clean the inside and outside of all windows and mirrors. Interior film can create a dangerous glare when the sun is low over the ocean.

●     Check Wiper Blades: Do your wipers streak or chatter? If they aren’t clearing water smoothly, replace them. Our coastal mist and rain will test them immediately.

●     Brake Check: Before you leave your neighborhood, test your brakes at a low speed. Listen for any new noises and feel for a soft or spongy pedal.

●     Emergency Kit: It’s always smart to have a basic kit in your trunk. Consider including a flashlight, a first-aid kit, drinking water, and a reflective warning triangle or flares.

●     Charge Your Phone: Ensure your phone is charged for navigation, music, and, in case of an emergency, making a call.
